Lessee, where are we today? The president and his handlers (because let’s face it, El Presidente is a demented meat puppet being maneuvered by a loose alliance of oligarchs who know the value of a demagogue figurehead.) Despite the systemic roadblocks being thrown up by the systems designed to stop authoritarian takeovers, they are successfully

• building concentration camps

• filling concentration camps with people targeted for being undesirable or easy targets

• bragging about building concentration camps

• emulating dictators

• praising dictators

• militarizing police and deploying military to act as police

• setting up new military forces not answerable to existing hierarchies

• stripping rights from women left and right

• dismantling public services

• gutting public health

• dehumanizing minorities one by one

• criminalizing free speech

None of these things shock me. They’re exactly what I expected to happen. Honestly, I kinda expected it to start in 2021 after a literal bloody coup. I appreciated the 4-year breather. Wish it coulda lasted.

Nope, none of these things are shocking. They fall under the heading of “when people tell you who they are, believe them.”

What makes me sad on a deep, morally injured level is that there are so many people still cheering on every single one of these actions.

I don’t know how to explain to people that when you support people doing bad things, that makes you a bad person too.
