Last Week With Mister Pips & Me
It’s been a busy week of being reminded to eat and doing far too much sitting in one place for long periods of time. (Pippin loved that second part.)
I wanted a better blog composer. Being me, that meant I switched hosting services, bought a new domain, and built a whole new site from the ground up. It took a busy week of big decisions and virtual housekeeping to get it done, but lo, it is done.
I went and bought my name domain and built a whole new website through Squarespace, which came recommended. Sure, I tried the free trial, and I poked at things for all of 3 days on the trial before I realized I loved it and coughed up the money for the domain, the hosting, and the email campaigns. (If you’re thinking of doing the same thing, contact me via Other Means and I can offer money-saving suggestions, but that’s more of a digression than I want to get into, here.)
Right now I’m just excited that kmherkes.com is up and running, with all my books represented both on the main page and through navigation menu, plus this new blog, and a few other bits and bobs that will take a while to get fully polished. Things like subscriber lists.
My working hypothesis is that people who signed up for a seasonal email newsletter don’t really care how I’m getting that to them, so I will migrate that list over and do a Spring Update real soon now. But as far as subscribers to the old blog….welp. As far as I can tell, about 90% of my Wordpress.com site’s “subscribers” were not actually getting it by email, and I suspect a lot of them are inactive humans or bots, so I won’t be importing that 300+ subscriber list over to this blog. Let it go, move on, that’s my way.
I will send out one last blog post on dawnrigger.com blog explaining that I’ve migrated my web presence away to kmherkes.com and giving links to blog signup pages that I have not yet built. It hasn’t been high on my priorities list because I really just can’t convince myself that anyone’s beating a path to my bog, waiting eagerly for my every written word.
(If you want to sign up now, there are forms located at the bottom of the home page and the main blog page. I think I have them configured correctly. Fingers crossed.)
ANYWAY, it’s totally on-brand for me to jump right into the deep end without even waiting the 15 minutes after eating to avoid cramps. (sorry, old, lifeguard joke) So here I am, doing my thing out in public.
I have to admit I love being able to parse out my thoughts in a nice, clean, quick-responsive online space that isn’t my Official Creative Professional Patreon page. Not that I’ll neglect the Patreon, no. This post will get crossposted there right away f’rex. Just as soon as I finish writing down things here.
That’s all for now!
